Summer school for Nanomaterials 2025 - the sixth day at the Institute of Experimental Medicine of the CAS

The last day of NanoEnviCz Summer School for Nanomaterials (September 11th) was devoted to the topics related to the safety aspects of nanostructured materials, with a focus on promoting their safe and sustainable development and utilization, and was organized at the Institute of Experimental Medicine of the CAS

More detailed information:

Workshop 1:  "Best Practices for Working Safely with Nanomaterials in Research Laboratories" -  Students were introduced to the potential health risks associated with handling nanomaterials in research laboratories. This was followed by interactive presentations and exercises on procedures and measures to minimize these risks, including the selection and use of appropriate control strategies and personal protective equipment. The workshop also covered the use of the Control Banding tool (CB Nanotool – Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory) for assessing nanomaterial-related risks and evaluating the suitability of control measures in laboratory settings.

Workshop 2: "In vitro Toxicity Testing of Nanomaterials" – Students were shown and practiced several in vitro methods for evaluating the toxicity and biocompatibility of nanomaterials. The workshop covered standard operating procedures for preparing nanomaterial samples for in vitro testing, techniques for seeding cells onto nanofiber scaffolds, testing nanomaterial extracts ("leachates") in accordance with ISO 10993-5:2009 (Biological evaluation of medical devices—In vitro cytotoxicity), and air–liquid interface exposures, which more closely mimic how lung cells encounter airborne particles.
