Abstract:
Titanium dioxide (TiO2), one of the most studied catalyst supports nowadays, has been extensively investigated in a variety of fields due to its stability, high electron mobility, and wide band gap between the valence and conduction bands. At the Institute of Inorganic Chemistry CAS, we prepare two different types of titania materials, each type is based on a different titania acid (peroxo- and meta-titanic). With the first type, a series of 2D-titanium dioxide nanosheets was synthesized via green and facile procedure by lyophilization of aqueous colloids of peroxotitanic acid. With the second type, a series of 1D-titanium dioxide nanorods called metatitanic acid was synthesized via simple and low-cost extraction of sulfate ions from the crystals of titanyl sulfate and their subsequent replacement with hydroxyl groups in aqueous solution while leaving the Ti-O framework intact.
The mainly studied area of application was the utilization of aforementioned materials as photocatalysts and their application as adsorbents (especially of heavy metals and radionuclides) from the aqueous solutions.
Speaker 2:

Abstract:
In this contribution, we present results of photocatalytic degradation of model pollutants in an aqueous solution, using sunlight and TiO2 photocatalyst immobilized on two types of floating, environmentally friendly supports: cork grains and foamed recycled glass. SEM/EDX analysis confirmed the presence of a Ti layer on the surface of both composites. The degradation experiments were performed first on a small scale under artificial UV irradiation, then the experimental setup was transferred to the outdoor conditions. The obtained results demonstrate good performance of both composites after repeated use.
