Abstract:

Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) has emerged as a powerful analytical technique, especially in the realm of nanomaterial research. This spectroscopic method, also known as electron spin resonance (ESR), is employed to investigate the behavior of unpaired electrons in a magnetic field, providing valuable insights into the electronic structure, local environments, and dynamic properties of paramagnetic species. In the context of nanomaterials, EPR has found diverse applications, contributing significantly to the understanding and characterization of various nanoscale systems. Nanomaterials, with their unique size-dependent properties, present challenges in traditional characterization techniques, making EPR a crucial tool for probing electron spin interactions at the nanoscale. One prominent application of EPR in nanomaterial research is the examination of magnetic nanoparticles. EPR enables the precise determination of magnetic properties, such as magnetic moment and spin dynamics, offering essential information for the design and optimization of magnetic nanomaterials for applications ranging from biomedical imaging to data storage. EPR has also strong potential in investigating defects and impurities in nanomaterials. Nanoparticles often exhibit different defect structures compared to their bulk counterparts, influencing their electronic properties. EPR allows researchers to identify and quantify these defects, aiding in the development of nanomaterials with enhanced functionalities.
