Driven by the advanced tools provided by nanotechnology, humanity is changing its approach to current and future obstacles. Nanomaterials of all kinds, including those with multiple elements that synergistically solve increasingly complex issues, are massively produced within this new vision. However, to prevent the paradoxical scenario of drowning in waste from the nanomaterials intended to assist us, minimizing the waste associated with their creation, usage, and disposal is mandatory. In response to this need, our team at the Technical University of Liberec is devoted to developing three laser-mediated synthesis pathways that can produce high-quality multi-element nanomaterials while avoiding creating chemical waste. These methods include laser synthesis of colloids, laser surface modification of materials, and laser-mediated photoreduction of metal salts in solution. These techniques involve irradiating precursor elements such as solids in bulk and structured or even molecular compounds. The targets can be irradiated in controlled environments like liquid or gaseous mediums, and the out-of-equilibrium conditions promoted by the laser-matter interactions enable us to produce various complex nanostructures. The most outstanding results derived from exploring these techniques, and that will be discussed in the meeting, encompass the creation of Fe ultra-small nanoparticles with multiple crystalline coexisting families for use as nanofillers in smart fluids, [1] the heterojunction of photosensitive semiconductors to fabricate robust photocatalyst,[2] the alloying of immiscible elements to generate non-conventional nanoalloys,[3] and the superficial modification of polymeric membranes to improve their capacity to recover pure water from oily polluted sources.[4]
